MLAIC World Championships 2012 (General)

by Øyvind F. ⌂ @, Bergen, Wednesday, May 02, 2012, 09:51 (1970 days ago)

Are you going to the MLAIC World Championships in Pforzheim, Germany in August this year? Norway is participating with 12 shooters, and I'm one of them.

I'm shooting the following classes:

  • Minié original (military percussion rifle-musket prone at 100 metres)
  • Lamarmora original (military percussion rifle-musket offhand at 50 metres)
  • Mariette (cap & ball revolver at 25 metres)
  • Vetterli replica (free percussion rifle offhand at 50 metres)
  • Whitworth replica (free percussion rifle prone at 100 metres)
  • Pennsylvania replica (flintlock rifle and roundball offhand at 50 metres)
  • Maximilian replica (flintlock rifle and roundball prone at 100 metres)

My ambitions are low, partly due to a ruptured meniscus in my left knee that prevents me from shooting prone for the time being. Hopefully I'll get surgery this month. My other disadvantage is that I'm one of the few who still refuses to use modern shooting jackets. However, I hope my new pair of Winner Champion shooting glasses will help improve my scores. While my optician claims my eyesight is near perfect, I have +0.25 correction on the sighting eye to help improve focus on the front sight.

The firearms

My old trusty P-1856 .577 Tower Enfield will be used for Minié and Lamarmora original. Although it's a bit on the light side it shoots quite well.

In Mariette I'm shooting an old Uberti Remington New Army with a pitted Walther barrel, while in Maximilian and Pennsylvania I'm shooting my Bookout Tennessee longrifle to which I have fitted aperture sights.

For Vetterli and Whitworth I bought a second hand Parker-Hale Birmingham made .451 Whitworth rifle on my way home from the European Championships in Hamina last year, and the first Vetterli training showed some promising results. 96 points – only four to go! :knegge:

It would be interesting if others could present their arsenals. :-)

Looks like we're competing in the same classes, Balázs. I was planning to shoot Miquelet original as well, but my Swedish M-1815 Husqvarna musket has a non-removable rear sight so it has to stay home. Hope to see you there in August! :-)

Smaniotto: Thanks, I hope it's not pure luck. I guess I'll find out the next time.

Looking forward to this although my personal goal only is to improve my results from Hamina last year.
But the trip itself will be a blast, I'm certain of that :-)

I'll be shooting six classes with three rifles:
Maximilian/Pennsylvania O. with a civilian jaeger rifle by Christof Schel, Sweden (ca. 1730) with a German barrel dated 1648. Probably an ex-wheellock .65 caliber.
Minié/Lamarmora O. with a Lawrence & Robbins P-1853.
Whitworth/Vetterli O. with a Swedish M1860 Wrede.

I'm onto something that (in my eyes)looks like precision with the .577. The Wrede needs a lot more testing. The jaeger performs well at 50m but I have difficulties at 100m. I have a .650 Jeff Tanner-mould for this rifle and I can't seem to get rid of air pockets below the sprue. I have opened the filling hole, tried 'force-feeding' lead, swirling and tapping but so far with poor results.
Anybody have a tip how to get better roundballs with these moulds?

Best regards,
Tor

Tor with the percussion hammer, I have the same problem with the Tanner moulds. Perhaps it's the lack of air vents that's causing this? I think many shooters would have been surprised if they split their bullets in half to check for voids – especially in Minié balls.

I tried the Whitworth for the first time at 100 metres yesterday (10 shots prone) and it seems to work ok. There are six shots in the left group, and there seems a slight inconsistency in my technique due to the fact that there are two tight groups. I'll have fix that in the next couple of months.

Looking promising with the whitworth rifling Öivind!
I shot my first major competition of this year 2 weekends ago in Forsa, which was our first try-out for the Euro Champs 2013.
The weather was cold and I was a bit "rusty" in my match form in Vetterli and with the musket in Miquelet. I was quite contempt in lamarmora though, where I manage a new Swedish record of 99 points with my replica rifle. I was just a little bit annoyed that I shot a 9 in the 12th shot...

Good training luck to you all and hope I´ll see you in Pforzheim!

Congratulations, that's incredibly good shooting this early in the season. Hope it stays like that until August. Why did you shoot the 9? :knegge:

The Whitworth performs very well in the humid Western Norwegian climate at least. I'm looking forward to trying it hot summer weather. I have focused on the Minié original and Maximilian replica lately, and I'm struggling a bit.

However, surgery in an hour, finally going to fix the broken knee!

By the way, does anybody know if there will be electronic or paper targets in Pforzheim?

It has now been two weeks since the knee surgery, and I'm recovering well. I'm still not able to shoot prone, but had a trip to the range yesterday and shot a Lamarmora original and Mariette. This was my second Lamarmora and first Mariette round this year, and the results wasn't that bad. In Lamarmora i shot a bit low and to the right, but that's fixable. H

Now I need to cast Whitworth bullets for the rest of the season and get in shape for the Norwegian championships in late June/early July. I'm still struggling with Maximilian and need to figure out what to do to prevent myself from emabarrasment :knegge:

The tendency in my first two Whitworth replica rounds so far has been ok, but the shots splits into two distinct groups. The height is fine, but sideways it's a bit suspicious. By looking at the two Whitworth targets the sights seems to be a tad loose. After the session I checked the front sight, and it was indeed a bit of play in the dovetail. Hope to fix it and get all the shots into the 9, with an occasional 10, of course. Here is yesterday's target, and you see the same on the one a couple of posts above.

Pennsylvanina replica is also improving. 93 yesterday, which is probably the best I've ever done.

I fear the heat in Germany. Yesterday it was sunny and about 18 degrees Celsius. That's hot for a Western Norwegian :knegge:

The Norwegian Championships is over. Althought the results won't scare anyone, it went fairly well on my part, at least in the replica 50 metre events. The results were as follows:

  • Whitworth replica: 92 points and 7th place
  • Vetterli replica: 94 points and 2nd place (silver)
  • Maximilian replica: 71 points and 5th place
  • Pennsylvania replica: 94 points and 1st place (gold)
  • Minié original: 77 points and 1st place (gold)
  • Lamarmora original: 87 points and 1st place (gold)
  • Mariette: 91 points and 6th place
  • Smith & Wesson: 85 points and 6th place (this is a Scandinavian class for black powder cartridge revolvers)

The results from the championships can be downloaded
here
.

With eight classes to shoot there wasn't much time for photographing, but here are some pictures:

Hello,
I bought recently a withworth rifle and looking for a proper load and bullet.
The rifle came with a Kranen grease groove withworth mould
I was wondering what type of bullet and load you shot there?
The best till now what i archieved is 1-60 bullet over a felt wad and 70 grains of Swiss #3 powder

I've tried several bullets in my Whitworth – from grease groove to paper patched – but the one that has performed best is the Lyman Whitworth bullet: http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/bullet-casting/mould-details-blackpowder.php?entryID=2

I size to .451" and use a hexagonal wad between the bullet and 82 grains of Swiss #3. I have used 90 grains of Swiss #3 as well, but the 82 grain loads does the job equally well. It is important that the bullet holes are hexagonal on the target, if not you're not using enough powder.

Let us know how your rifle shoots, it's always interesting to hear from fellow Whitworth shooters!

MLAIC World Championships 2012

by michael arnette, Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 13:08 (1894 days ago) @ Øyvind F.

Hi Im michael arnette on the US team going to Germany in August. I shoot the Miquelet O with an original flint contract muskset from the revolutionary war and in the Lamamora O a zouave original 58 cal, also the mariette I shoot a Hege army maximun 44 and a mortimer rifle in the pennsylsvania match. I understand how you feel about the shooting coat, on principal, but you need to use the rules to help you , not handicap you, you must use the coat until they change the rules. If you have the same skill and weapon as your German counterpart and he uses a shooting coat and you do not, he will beat you every time. I too have an orthpoedic injury to my right shoulder , Ive injured my rotator cuff muscles in my right shoulder.I will see a shoulder sspecialist after the world championships and our national matches in october here in the us. Why dont you use a knee brace to stabalize your knee? I have had the best of luck with several shooting glasses , ssometimes one for different weapons, this really improves my scores. With my newest lenses Ive shot a 96 in the lamamoraO , 94 in mariette, 95 in the mortimer and 94 in the miquelet. I wish you the best of luck in germany. One of your targets seemed to have bullet holes that are hexagional, do you shoot a 6 sided bullet, like the ones in the withworth , I mean the ones they used in the american civil war? See you in Germany mike arnette

Hi Michael

Yes, I shoot a Parker-Hale Whitworth in Vetterli and Whitworth, and which makes nice hexagonal holes.

The knee is actually quite well now, but I will probably use something to support my knee just in case.

Regarding shooting jackets it's possible to beat them, even with inferior weapons. It's just a matter of holding still and the centre of the target. Winning against them are twice the fun. In Germany I'm most concerned about the heat. We've had 11 degrees Celsius (52 Fahrenheit) and rain the last couple of days. Something happens with my accuracy when I shoot in dry and warm weather. We'll see :-)

I just noticed that the starting lists have been published now. For those who haven't seen them, they are here.
