This type of tompion was adopted in 1853, but the wood shrank during use and fell out of the barrel. As a result, the small horizontal pin was added in 1859 to expand the plug. Note that wood is a live material, and the diameter of the tompions after splitting may vary. Some can be used without the pin and some may require a thicker pin.
