Newspaper wads

Mainly used in black powder cartridges, the news paper wads serves two purposes: to prevent the bullet from sticking to other wads in the wad column or as an over primer wad in the bottom of the case before the powder is loaded. The latter acts as a buffer for the primer and prevents powder granuels from entering the flash hole. Read more about this in From Musket to Metallic Cartridge.
