Texas Rangers was formally established
Texas' formally approved the establishment of Texas Rangers. Actually what was to become Texas Rangers already started in 1823, but was not until 1835 that it came under government control. Robert McAlpin Williamson was the first major of the Texas Rangers' and within two years he had 300 men under him. Their main task was to protect Texans from Cherokee and Comanche Indians and other lawless elements.

Texas rangers would also prove to be important for Samuel Colts early career. Colt Paterson, Samuel Colt’s first revolver was used by the Texas Rangers, and acted as a catalyst for Colt. Prior to the outbreak of the Mexican War in 1846 Samuel Colt was visited by Samuel H. Walker. Then a captain in the US Army, Walker had used the Paterson revolver while serving in the Texas Rangers, including in the skirmish against the Comanche Indians at Walker Creek in 1844. Colt and the former rangers collaborated on what would become the huge Walker Colt revolver.
