Germantown was founded
The village of Germantown was founded. It was first settled by immigrants from the Rhine valley in what is now Germany. In 1681 William Penn published a German-language leaflet to recruit settlers to his new colony. The first group to answer, Mennonites and German Quakers from Krefeld, arrived in Philadelphia aboard the Concord in October 1683. Germantown can therefore be called the starting point of the Pennsylvania Germans, or Pennsylvania Dutch, in America.
