The last Confederate unit surrendered
The last Confederate unit surrendered after the American Civil War. The force was led by Cherokee chief and brigadier general Stand Watie. Watie refused to accept defeat and continued the war longer than any other Confederate general. He kept his army in the field nearly a month after the last other Confederate troops had surrendered and a full 75 days after General Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House.

Watie's small army consisted of Cherokees, Seminoles, Creeks and Osages. After the war he returned to Indian Territory and found his home burned by Union soldiers. He died in 1871.
