Germantown ble grunnlagt
Landsbyen Germantown grunnlagt. Byen ble først bosatt av immigranter fra Rhindalen i nåværende Tyskland. I 1681 publiserte William Penn et flygeblad på tysk for å rekruttere bosettere i hans nye koloni. Den første gruppen som svarte, mennonitter og tyske kvekere fra Krefeld i Tyskland, ankom Philadelphia ombord i Concord i oktober 1683. Derfor kan Germantown kalles grunnlaget for tyskerne i Pennsylvania, eller Pennsylvania Dutch, en etnisk gruppe i USA.
